Hospice of Spokane organizes several events throughout the year. From continuing education classes for professionals, to small workshops for donors, to more social gatherings, we work hard to give attendees a unique experience.
Hospice Foundation of America Teleconference
Each spring, Hospice of Spokane hosts a local site for a national teleconference organized by the Hospice Foundation of America. While this is a continuing education event for professionals who work with those facing the end of lifesocial workers, chaplains, nurses, physicians, funeral directors, etc.the general public is always welcome to attend. Following a televised discussion featuring nationally-recognized experts on various areas of grief, a panel of local authoritiesphysicians, nurses, counselors, etc.engages attendees in an additional presentation and question and answer session.
Taste of Life
Started in 2006, Hospice of Spokane created this event to dispel the perception that hospice is strictly about death and dying, and highlight the fact that hospice is truly about making the most ofand celebratinglife. Taste of Life features beverages from Spokane area wineries and breweries, along with unique culinary fare created specifically to pair with the evening’s featured drinks. A silent auction also gives attendees the chance to bid on prizes and support Hospice of Spokane even more.
Scramble for Hospice
To support the building of Spokane ’s first hospice house, Hospice of Spokane and a cadre of dedicated volunteers host an annual scramble format golf tournament. Held at Indian Canyon Golf Course, the Scramble for Hospice directs 100% of the event’s proceeds to the hospice house. After playing 18 holes on a nationally-recognized course, players sit down to dinner and a brief program where the day’s course competition winners and top teams are announced.
Estate and Life Planning Workshops
On an ad hoc basis, Hospice of Spokane’s volunteer Planned Giving Committee hosts small workshops for donors on a variety of issues. From changes in Medicaid and Medicare eligibility and benefit laws, to what documents are necessary to ensure end-of-life care wishes are properly expressed and honored. These workshops are presented by local authorities, and are offered to Hospice of Spokane donors in appreciation for their support of Hospice of Spokane’s work in our community.
Planned Giving Committee Continuing Education
Every two years, Hospice of Spokane’s volunteer Planned Giving Committee organizes an event for professionals whose work brings them in contact with the dying and their families. Attorneys. Accountants. Insurance professionals. Trust officers. Certified professional guardians. Social workers. This workshop helps better equip professionals from theseand otherdisciplines, to fulfill professional obligations to their clients, while also tending to the unique personal needs that come with serving the dying.
Community Memorial Tree
To encourage community members to pause during the hectic holiday season and consider what is truly important, Hospice of Spokane hosts an annual Community Memorial Tree. Not intended as a fundraising event, the Tree is displayed in a public area during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Staffed by volunteers, passers by are invited to decorate a white paper dove in memory of a loved one and hang it on the Tree. Decorations span the gamut, from simply writing the first name of a parent, spouse or child, to ornate, multi-colored drawings. While the intricacy of the doves varies, the sentiment of love is constant.
