Volunteering for Hospice of Spokane
"Being a Hospice of Spokane Volunteer has allowed me the opportunity to open the door for people who are not aware of what is available to them at a critical time in the life of the family. This is a life-giving experience for me as well as the person receiving the gift of hope."

Hospice of Spokane has served the terminally ill and their families in Spokane County since 1977 when it was created by five dedicated volunteers. Today, volunteers still form the backbone of the organization. As a hospice volunteer, you will become part of a health care team, consisting of the client's own physician, hospice medical directors, nurses, social workers, nurse aids, therapists and chaplains. Because there are so many ways to serve, you have a choice of how you may use your skills.
What do Hospice of Spokane Volunteers do?
Hospice volunteers can work in many areas. The following information describes each area of service:
Client and family care volunteers
Client family care volunteers typically spend two to five hours each week providing direct client care. In the direct care role, you may be needed to provide respite so the caregiver can have a break, or to provide one or more of the following services:
• Listening, sharing your presence
• Sharing a hobby
• Grocery shopping or other errands
• Music therapy
• Light housekeeping or yard work
• Assisting clients with memoirs, writing letters, sharing a good book
• Hairstyling, perming, etc.
• Preparing meals
• Home maintenance assistance
• Pet therapy
• Licensed massage therapy or reiki
Office assistance
Office volunteers play a vital role in helping Hospice of Spokane efficiently serve our community. Office volunteers help with mailings, preparing materials for clients, host events, inform the public about hospice care, etc. Volunteer skills are invaluable to the daily operation of Hospice of Spokane.
