Continuing Education

Hospice of Spokane provides educational presentations, many with credits certified through DSHS, on a wide variety of topics surrounding end-of-life issues.

Whether you need a presentation on clinical topics for caregiving staff at a skilled nursing facility, provider office, adult family home, or you are part of a service club or professional group that is interested in learning more about caring for people facing end-of-life issues, we can customize a presentation to meet your unique needs. Some of the areas that we can cover are:

Hospice 101: A high-level overview that covers the basic requirements of being admitted to hospice, who qualifies for hospice services, what is included in hospice services, and how to refer someone to hospice.

Final Hours – Signs and Symptoms: Provides information on how to recognize when a patient is approaching the final weeks of life, including changes in the cardiac, circulatory, respiratory, and dietary systems.

Qualifying Guidelines: An in-depth analysis to help clinicians determine when a patient may be eligible for hospice services.

Essential Paperwork at End of Life: Summarizes the process and paperwork (such as living wills, health care power of attorney, POLST forms and more) to ensure that the dying person’s hopes, fears, wishes, and priorities are honored when they are no longer able to direct their own care.

Other topics include:

  • Children’s Grief Perspectives
  • Communication at the End of Life
  • Cultural Considerations at the End of Life
  • Dementia
  • Grief During the Holidays
  • Loss, Grief, and Bereavement
  • Pain & Symptom Management
